One thing is for sure, when it comes to OUR kids (I might be speaking for only myself but somehow I doubt it) why do they not fear us like we feared our parents? I have kids, older kids, kids who have discovered their MOUTHS and ways to use it incorrectly. For example let me reenact a scenario between my father and I when I was around my oldest daughter’s age (11)

Me: Um dad….I was wondering, if ummm……nevermind

Dad: Would you QUIT beating around the bush and just SAY it?

Me: Well you’ll probably say no anyway….

Dad: The why are you bothering, don’t you have homework to do?

Me: Uh yeah, but I was THINKING after I did it Carrie could come over and we -

Dad: No, it’s a schoolnight

Me: OK (and I slink off with my tail between my legs)

SAME SCENARIO … Me and my daughter

Shannon: Mom, Natalie’s coming over, and we want ice cream

Me: Forget it Shannon, I know you didn’t do your homework

Shannon: YES I DID! MOM! Why do you ALWAYS say no?

Me: I DON’T always say no, you know homework comes first!

Shannon: MOTHER! Stop being so unfair! I get good grades so what’s your problem?

Me: MY PROBLEM is that you KNOW the rules and are still trying to get out of it

Shannon: This sucks! Fine I’ll just tell her my MOM never lets me do anything!

Look it over people….look it over. Now I am not EVEN saying violence is the answer, but when I was that age I did NOT DARE argue with my parents, and if I did the consequences were far worse than just sucking it up and accepting they said no. Why aren’t our kids afraid of us? Why do they think we are kidding? And furthermore why DO we give in? It just doesn’t seem RIGHT that it’s a losing battle and US AS PARENTS are getting the shaft because people who think they OWN US TELL US what we can and cannot do to our children and guess what? The kids are getting SMARTER and they know what we can no longer get away with. All it takes is one good old fashioned butt busting for the cops and CPS to be at your door rerady to take your kids away. What is WRONG with this? We got our asses whipped as kids, and it didn’t screw us up, in fact these unpunished kids are far worse than us who were “beaten” by our parents. We never worried about school shootings, or “lockdowns” shit we didn’t even need metal detectors! What was our biggest worry? A bully pushing us around once in awhile, maybe a little peer pressure to try a cigarette or sip of beer. Yes by the time we were in high school it was GRADUALLY starting to escalate, but now I wonder if my kids being in public school is a good choice, because if I swat my kids for something and it gets to a teacher, I’m dead in the water. and kids these days KNOW this. Our hands are literally tied because we are abusing them in all ways shapes or forms. Grounding them is bad for their self esteem and makes them feel isolated, spanking is abuse and turns kids violent NO IT DOESN’T, letting these sons of bitches do whatever they fucking want makes them into this! We as parents these days can’t seem to get it right or we are called to the mat. I honestly think if the government, child workers etc would let us do what WORKED for our parents, we would not have these awful issues now. I am serious! CPS caseworkers should deal with the TRUE abuse and neglect, not come pounding our doors down because we spanked Billy and he didn’t l;ike it so he told his school counselor. If a kid came to me and said ‘mom spanked me because I told her to kiss my ass” I would have said GOOD for her! You do NOT talk to your mother that way!

Take this for what it is, but I have had it with being told how to be a parent.
